Needing funds, a rodent researcher turns to OnlyFans. Not like that.

An Azteca ant inside her brood nest in a hollow Cecropia tree stem.

What she is holding is not an egg or a larva (those are the lumpy things with the interior dark patch) but a food body produced by the tree specifically to feed the ants, as they protect the tree from caterpillars. Colombia.

Old growth trees being transported on #bchwy19 near #Nanaimo this morning.

I would guess this is just one tree, likely transported by several truck loads. Looks like a western red cedar, about 200-300 years old.

They are still logging these in previously reserved areas along the Alberni Inlet (Nahmint) and on the North Island. 😢

These were in 8-10ft chunks on the truck. Not sure what their destination would be. Possibly chipoing for pulp/paper or 🤷‍♂️

A total open fire ban starts today which usually means the forests shut down.

Not sure if that is the case, as the fire danger is not extreme but any reason to stop cutting these elders would be worth it.

i try to emphasize good news

and if i can't do that i try to emphasize anger over sadness

but there's nothing i can do about this bit of news except be depressed:

"Mass drowning of chicks puts emperor #penguins at risk of #extinction"

theguardian.com/environment/20…

essentially, #globalWarming, the #climateCrisis, is breaking up the ice the #emperorPenguin depends upon to raise its young, and this is resulting in mass killings of their young now

😔
