Northrop N-23/YC-125 Raider trimotor transport. Looks pre-war, but was built in 1949 to replace pre-war Ford Trimotors. Lost out to the flood of cheap ex-military DC-3s. Several were built for arctic rescue when the US and Canada were building the DEW Line radar network. The rescue variant could carry JATO pods, which I think makes it the only rocket-assisted prop trimotor. At the Pima Air & Space Museum, Tucson.

A week ago I had my third emergency detached retina surgery. Earlier today the surgeon conducted a one-week post-op exam and said I'm healing fine with everything looking good...so far.

The surgeon deliberately put a gas bubble in my eye, so I can't return to the mountains until that bubble is gone...in 4 to 6 weeks.

Once I get back home, I will do a few minor things to the glider, then assemble it again for a full-power taxi test.

I need to cultivate more patience....

Most #SpiritAirlines flights canceled this evening on the LAS and LAX flight boards. Also, all their international flights to Central and South America were canceled. Planes down there came back. If they were planning to wind down operations tonight, this is what would be expected. But for now, a lot of their planes are flying. A check of FlightAware's fleet status for #SpiritAirlines shows the shutdown of the airline is already in progress. 5 flights are filed with ferry flight numbers (no passengers), 2 already in flight, to Pinal Air Park #KMZJ in Arizona. MZJ does not have airline service. It's a boneyard. Planespotting from home: IcelandAir A321LR (neo) descending out of the cloud base leaves visible condensation in the vortices behind the outer edges of its flaps. Conditions have to be just right for the condensation to be visible. This effect disappeared as relative humidity decreased slightly as it descended farther below the clouds. #KPDX #weather #aviation #avgeek #travel #PNW
