The Bubble Nebula, also known as NGC 7635, Sharpless 162, or Caldwell 11, is an H II region emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia.

It lies close to the open cluster Messier 52. The "bubble" is created by the stellar wind from a massive hot, 8.7 magnitude young central star, SAO 20575 (BD+60°2522).

The nebula is near a giant molecular cloud which contains the expansion of the bubble nebula while itself being excited by the hot central star, causing it to glow.

1. At first you have #fascism

2. Then you have #satire of fascism

3. And then... fascism embraces satire as real?

🥴

I think #PoesLaw is broken

We've entered an era where satire is not indistinguishable from fascism without an indication of intent, but instead satire is just more fodder for fascism regardless of intent

The historic first Earthrise photo from the Moon was received 60 years ago today. It was shot on film, developed onboard the Lunar Orbiter 1 spacecraft, scanned, transmitted home...and then meticulously restored decades later.

Let's take a moment to appreciate the Parker Solar Probe

Currently it's by FAR the fastest human made object ever, with an incredible 635,000 kilometers per hour, the peak velocity is roughly 0.064% the speed of light

- Around Earth in about 4 minutes
- To the moon in about 36 minutes

btw on the #ReflectOrbital business, that catastrophically offensive startup who wants to put a big floating mirror in #space called "Eärendil-1". they're claiming to offer "sunlight as a service" and pretending it's a green energy thing. almost certainly they're lying about that and only REALLY want to put a big fucking bright light in the sky because...well these are #tech dunces. the vandalism is the point. they want to leave a mark on the Universe and they don't care if the mark is a gaping wound.

but I can also believe easily that techbros are so impatient and cloddish that they can't wait for the Sun to come up

"The rapid expansion of commercial and governmental space activities is leaving a measurable chemical signature in Earth’s stratosphere through emissions from rocket launches and satellite re-entries. The scientific community is calling for urgent, coordinated action to understand and assess the potential impact on the atmosphere."

New ESO study finds that current proposals to launch 1.7+ million satellites into orbit would have devastating consequences for astronomy.

Leaking in the hallway
Russians got a saw
Losing lots of oxygen
Space livin's raw

Sheltering in a capsule
Hope we don't explode
Might have to bail here
Have to hit the road

This creaky station's
Got us in a bind
Red lights alarm flashing
Hope that crack they find

I dunno what Sergey
Is doing over there
Sure hope that patch holds
The kinda isn't fair

I guess over there at NASA
There's not a lost of trust
That the Russian have this handled
Hope it's not more rust

This FABULOUS... missed it, but an artist transmitted a message from space (on an ESA spaceprobe) for people to receive and decode on Earth, as a simulated SETI message. h/t @michael_w_busch

"...The project consists in transmitting a simulated extraterrestrial message as part of a live performance, using an ESA spacecraft as celestial source. The objective of the project is to involve the world-wide Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence community, professionals from different fields and the broader public, in the reception, decoding and interpretation of the message. ..."
