I changed the men's room at my favorite café to the Omen room and that inspired one of the baristas to change the women's room to an Omen room, too!

This week I've been mainly reading, no. 306.

On one level Lauren Jimerson's Painting her Pleasure: Three Women Artists & the Nude in Avant-Garde Paris (2023) is a fascinating & focussed study of three women artists' depiction of female nudes. Sadly too often the convoluted, academic expression detracts from the interest of the argument. There is much of value here but a more fluid narrative would help make points that here often sink beneath a tortured expression.

The United Nations reports that the social media environment has become increasingly toxic & hostile to women. As the report concludes:

'Gender rights rollback is both enabled & exacerbated by technologies which – by design – amplify misogynistic hate speech for profit'...

The Q, is what can be done; it is anti-democratic for Govt.s to shrug & claim that Big Tech needs to sort out its own mess... we're waaaay beyond that being a viable solution!

As Laurie Penny argues feminists have been condemned to be the Casandras of the Manosphere - they warned us decades ago that it would come to this, and too often they were mocked for a 'lack of a sense of humour' or exaggerating the threat.... but I imagine few feminists will be glad that their warnings have been comprehensively vindicated.

Rather we should have listened then & we should listen now...
