@zzzeek
If the business models fail (bubble bursts), much of the push to insert LLMs / agentic into everything everywhere will vanish without the funding, while simultaneously the costs of LLMs / agentic will skyrocket without the subsidies

LLMs / agentic will become a pedestrian part of the AI field, used in the specialised cases where they're useful

This is good but he's too positive about #LLMs:
- he says they are "genuinely useful" having started that some users can get identical results with less work. That's conjecture because they do not get identical results even if code generated is identical. The difference is all the insight and notes created by doing the work. The scope for speed up is limited unless you avoid the most valuable part of the work.

- there is no responsible use of #LLM tech because of the harms using it causes

Anthropic spent billions of dollars to slice the spines off millions of books, including very rare ones.

AI companies are purchasing large quantities of used and rare books and scanning their contents to train LLMs. They then turn the originals to pulp.

The sum of human thought, digitized and shredded. Every book that gets scanned disappears from the physical world permanently.

Books that survived wars, fires, and centuries of handling are being shredded so an AI can learn to write a better marketing email.

Please stop posting about how you're running a slop machine on local hardware under the privacy hashtag!

The technology is built on massive privacy violations, no matter where it's running! If someone claims that running their slop machine locally is privacy-friendly, their notion of who has a right to privacy is obviously limited to themselves!

Confusing Outputs for Awareness:

Opponents view citing an LLM's self-reported probability of consciousness (e.g., asking a model if it is conscious and analyzing its reply) as a fundamental misunderstanding of next-token prediction, treating sophisticated pattern matching as genuine internal experience.

I know this might sound obvious, but not a single human understands the code they run into production. What the machine runs is, from the cpu microcode (we know it is security relevant) to the os to the userland OS libraries (the filesystem, the network stack, the memory management, the scheduler, all eminently security relevant) to the libraries and frameworks to finally something that someone on your team might have some knowledge of. This does not include cloud orchestration and remote services and things that might be entirely out one developers visibility.

Some developers are more aware of these complexities than others, but from my experience, 90% of developers think that last part of the chain is “all the code”, and the other 10% usually suffer a lot of BS because of it, since their work is out of the realm of comprehension of the rest.

I’m not advocating for yeeting an entire rewrite to the world after just 6 days of building, but the issue here is not the fact that no one has read the code.

What allows us to push so much code into production is that we built abstractions and patterns that allow us to trust the code we haven’t written to behave in a reasonable manner and not fuck with our stuff too much. One part we can gain trust is by studying it (which usually also doesn’t involve reading the full code, I have a reasonable understanding of how some parts of Linux work, but haven’t read most of the code. Its actual complexity would melt my head, so I’m staying at surface APIs and experiments and textbooks and articles), another is by just running it and fucking with it long enough that we trust that it’s good enough, especially if a lot of other people do the same (this is probably the most important trust metric). The tiniest trust metric imo is having looked at the code within the context of a code review, especially with the dismal UIs we have for that purpose. They by design contain the things that get reviewed to that tiny layer on top, and even within that last codebase, actively hide away systemic complexities and things like “is there other code here that might be relevant”.

@anne_twain Toddlers can bake cakes, but left on their own they would burn the house down. Adults need to direct the toddlers, then throw away the entire batch and do the work properly themselves, but toddlers can sure bake cakes 🤡

(With the huuuuuuge difference that toddlers stop being toddlers at some point!)

If LLMs were to start modifying themselves without reference to real live humans, there's fun to be had speculating on what an LLM might select as an "improvement". Could be anything, but let's say it's something that appears often on the net. Temu ads? Multi-syllable words? "My grandma taught me this"? Interrupting everything with ads? Quoting Captain Kirk? Cat photos?

Not a developer, but that was my first thought when I understood how LLMs were trained and how they worked: What happens when there's so much AI generated content on the internet that the LLM is harvesting and recycling its own output? That's like a high school history class having their own essays as research material. #LLMs

I’ve been testing a theory: many people who are high on #AI and #LLMs are just new to automation and don’t realize you can automate processes with simple programming, if/then conditions, and API calls with zero AI involved.

So far it’s been working!

Whenever I’ve been asked to make an AI flow or find a way to implement AI in our work with a client, I’ve returned back with an automation flow that uses 0 AI.

Things like “when a new document is added here, add a link to it in this spreadsheet and then create a task in our project management software assigned to X with label Y”.

And the people who were frothing at the mouth at how I must change my mind on AI have (so far) all responded with resounding enthusiasm and excitement.

They think it’s the same thing. They just don’t understand how much automation is possible without any generative tools.

Well said. Exactly correct.

#GenAI answers by pattern matching by frequency of occurrence in the data. If most people get it wrong, the answer is wrong. Nuance and validity are not a criteria unless that's frequently found. #LLMs trained on the Internet—you will never find a more wretched hive of DATA scum and villainy—spout only the opinion and spin they find, as what is more frequently found than that?
