In #India in May, Chief Justice #SuryaKant compared #unemployed #youth to “cockroaches” and “parasites” in a hearing

Well there's an interesting thing that happens when you use a slur against a group of people:

#Reappropriation

A negative slur flipped to a statement of pride

Now mere frustration among young Indians over #education, #jobs and the #economy has morphed into large #protests and even a political movement:

Its worth noting that the two demonstrations in London today *seemed* to have only led to 11 arrests for a 'variety of offences' which is pretty low by previous standards.

The police may have kept numbers down, of course, by keeping the two demonstrations completely separated.

Nonetheless, whatever we may feel about Unite the Kingdom march, provided the Police were not giving some protestors a 'free pass' this seems broadly good news.

I went to the Stop the War march in Tamariki Makaurau yesterday. Despite the impending cyclone, and the implied threats of violence from pro-US counterprotesters, a few hundred people attended. Enough to block Queen St and Custom St while we marched down to the US consulate, and did a mass die-in. This video covers it pretty well;

There's another day of action planned for May Day (May 1).

The problem the Metropolitan Police now face is no-one actually believes that decisions of routes for demonstrations are unbiased, nor the policing of protestors, especially in light of the end of the pause on arresting peaceful protestors breaking the proscription of Palestine Action.

Even if the Met are right that decision are not political, no-one beliefs that (and their past actions are what has led to such scepticism). The Met is not trusted!
