#ukraine is strangling russia's #economy

Andrei Klepach:

'Russia was “falling behind” China and the US and “in some respects Ukraine”… a “social crisis” would erupt “when no one particularly expects it… We will not win this competition in a war of attrition with Ukraine… We have an illusion that everything will collapse there… it won’t”'

and… he's fired

without dissent the folly of the echo chamber means failure

This sounds bad. 😬

"In the past five weeks, the market has collapsed, shedding almost 40 per cent, and threatening the livelihood of millions of South Koreans...

More than a million South Koreans are underwater as a result of the crash, and several hundred thousand have lost everything, and then some.

They borrowed to the hilt to take part in a frenzied splurge on technology stocks, particularly memory chip makers, in a market now experiencing a savage reversal.

Nothing, not even the stellar earnings of the country's two biggest chip makers, has been able to stem the panic, primarily because the debt that fuelled the stock market boom is now accentuating the crash."

So how is #Russia doing internally nowadays?

"Veteran Russian #Communist Party leader #GennadyZyuganov suggested using part of the trillions of rubles held in #bank accounts by households and businesses to support the #economy"

So I was out today in public (ran into an estate sale on the way back from a routine doctor's appt) and fascinating to hear the chatter among the people waiting in line to get in. A bunch of people complaining about healthcare costs, the greed of CEOs... *multiple* people who had to drive their kids to another hospital because our local hospital was taken over by HCA and wouldn't accept them as patients; complaints about how the hospital only cares about profits, and how different it is (with no blame to doctors and nurses, only the company and its executives). It was a lot of people nodding and agreeing, and (as far as I could tell) a very mixed political demographic and socioeconomic factors. Healthcare and hospital system CEOs may be one of the most hated groups of people in the world. #random #healthcare #economy

WaPo: House passes bill cutting food aid for pregnant women, children

Under the legislation, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children — more commonly known as WIC — would lose $141 million in funding for fruit and vegetable benefits for the nearly 5.4 million children and pregnant and postpartum women enrolled, according to an estimate from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. The Senate has yet to consider the legislation.

If you don't know, #Russia has an annual #economy forum

So we're already in a joking mood

They had a 'Russia 2050' report

3 scenarios for 25 years out:

1. inertial: "American and Chinese hegemony"
2. bad: Russia loses the war and is "colonized"
3. good: "ideological war" victory, nukes are used for some reason, Kyiv/ Odesa/ Kharkiv/ "and so on" annexed, and... the #EU disintegrates I guess just for funsies

There's better amateur fan fiction conventions

bank runs in #russia are a big possibility with the creaky russian #economy

and russia just passed a law allowing independent *bank* paramilitaries?

they didn't allow independent oil refinery corporation militaries

🤔

so what happens when a bunch of russians run to the bank to withdraw all of their money at the same time

and they are met with a freaking armed bank #paramilitary?

LA Times: ‘Brutal’: A growing tribe of jobless techies is lost in Silicon Valley’s new reality

"...Battered by years of mass layoffs, California tech workers were hoping the job market would rebound this year. But things are getting worse.

Now, many are redrawing their career paths.

Artificial intelligence has triggered fierce competition for top talent and is also fueling tens of thousands of layoffs this year. The class divide is widening in Silicon Valley as a tiny group of employees is landing unprecedented packages for AI skills, while many others struggle to find work. ..."

Wired: Meta Employees Are Scrambling to Use Up Benefits Ahead of Layoffs

On the eve of about 8,000 jobs being cut, employees are cashing in on headphone stipends and other perks while they still can.

"...Two employees describe a widespread rush to use up an annual $2,000 flexible benefit, which can cover a variety of expenses including health and wellness activities. A separate triennial credit of $200 toward the purchase of audio gear has led to a scramble to purchase Apple AirPods and other headphones. Another source says Meta offices have been largely empty this week, as people prioritize polishing their résumés and gather offsite to commiserate with friends for what may be their final time as colleagues. Okay, if this is real, this is worse than I was expecting. I've been thinking about secondary outputs but I've been thinking way more about plastics, inks, other secondaries.

I have been worried about products shortages but maybe not enough. I am and have been assuming that there will be preferential distribution to corporations (which obviously includes most freight) and least preference given to individuals trying to do their own work themselves - e.g., like RAM over the last several months. But I haven't thought about the price side of that.

And holy shit it's gonna get fugly.

So, uh, yeah.

Maybe buy an ebike. Maybe make some plans.
