Much of the discussion of UK un(der) unemployment revolves around who is seen as the agent of demand:

If we see jobs as a demand by employers for workers, then it looks like the UK is not helping prospective workers find/develop the skills that firms want.

But, if we see workers as demanding jobs (in an economic sense) from employers, then the unwillingness to take what is on offer points to the unappealing quality & character of work on offer...

Or both, of course!

Here' some context to the slight drop in UK unemployment reported yesterday. Across the OECD the UK's unemployment rate is just above the overall (aggregated) rate for the whole of the OECD.

So, while the unemployment rate remains too high (from a welfare standpoint) given the international context the UK is hardly an outlier on this indicator, even if in other areas from productivity to investment the UK's is a lot further from commonplace performance.
