Pixelfed is not for sale. It never was.

I've turned down 6 and 7 figure offers, and I'd do it again tomorrow. Some things matter more than a beach and a Peach Bellini.

We're building something generational here. Something that outlives us if we get it right.

100M+ people. Ethically sustainable. Admins and creators get paid.

You deserve better, and we're going to build it together.

Can someone explain to me why was Pixelfed, Loops, and Dansup being singled out for AI use?

There's no shortage of Fediverse software that are either built with AI assistance (including vibe coding), or welcomes AI contribution, but I'm not seeing the same level of outrage.

Did Pixelfed, Loops, and Dansup specifically promise to be AI-free?

Blocks on the fediverse have a consistency problem.

When a Block or Undo Block gets lost between servers, the two sides quietly disagree about who blocked whom. Sometimes that means a blocked account can still reach you.

Our fix, FEP-070c: Block synchronization across servers, is now accepted as a draft. Pixelfed is the first implementation, merged and shipping in our next release.

wow is that really your position @dansup ? I thought this thread would make you think a little, but it does not look like it.
Are you really that big idiot people says you are ?

Laravel + PHP gains a batteries included package for ActivityPub support, with both draft-cavage and RFC 9421 HTTP Sig support and the ability to extend every aspect, with before() and after() hooks for easy custom processing.

It's quite amazing.

I'll be tagging a new release this week.

Okay, laravel-activitypub is near ready to ship!

I'll be testing it with shutter, a single user activitypub server for image sharing.

Making real progress on laravel-activitypub, a batteries included ActivityPub package for laravel.

This will replace federation logic in @pixelfed and @joinloops and make it really easy to implement AP in your own laravel apps!

I swore not to speak about #FediHood any more, but what #Pixelfed is doing is great news for #ActivityPub.
Pixelfed already sends the location as a Place object with latitude and longitude, so FediHood can read it and put markers on a map.
Local timelines used to mean one instance. Now they can mean people actually around you.

Places, a unique Pixelfed feature that allows you to add an optional location to your posts to make them discoverable by place!

We are working to support custom places too!

πŸ†• blog! β€œActivityBot is the recipient of an NLnet grant!”

Back in February, I applied for NLnet's Next Generation Zero grant. They were looking for Fediverse projects to help rewild the social media landscape. Or, as they describe it:

Reclaim the public nature of the internet

Small and medium-sized R&D grants between 5.000 and 50.000 euro,…

Name another photo app that will happily send you to a competitor.

If Pixelfed isn't for you, there are many amazing alternatives like:

- @frequency
- @gotosocial
- @admin
- @vernissage

All of them let you share images. All of them talk to Pixelfed. Leaving isn't a punishment here, because you never lose the network.

When you put people first, you build doors instead of cages.

If Pixelfed isn't for you, maybe one of these are:

- @frequency
- @gotosocial
- @admin
- @vernissage

Every one of these can share images, and every one of them federates with Pixelfed. Your followers, your posts, your reach: they come with you.

ActivityPub means no one has to be trapped anywhere. That's the magic.

Somewhere else, this is a patent fight. Here it's a GitHub issue.

github.com/pixelfed/starter-ki…

Almost 2 years ago I started planning federated Starter Kits. @Mastodon took the idea, turned it into a FEP, and built it with my feedback rather than around it.

It shipped in @loops this year. Mastodon shipped Featured Collections months later.

Compatible. Collaborative. Consent-driven πŸš€

I know the Pixelfed codebase is messy, but I'm a far better Laravel dev than when I started it, and @phpstan has been keeping Loops rock solid at every level.

This week: preparing the new mobile app, fixing comment threading so you never miss a reply, and laying the foundation for the next-gen APIs that will power the new webUI and mobile app.

Tests are coming to lock in stability too. Pixelfed is getting the Loops treatment πŸ’… πŸš€

#pixelfed #loops #fediverse #activitypub

I will admit, I did get a bit carried away with @pixelfed features over the years.

Collections, DMs, Ephemeral Stories, Filters, Groups and Portfolios were all started with good intentions, but without the continued focus and stability they deserve.

Once I get caught up with bug fixes and making the core features more solid, they are up next!

No new features will be added until the platform is as rock solid as Loops is πŸ˜‰

#pixelfed #loops #activitypub #fediverse

#FediHood now supports #ActivityPub events, which means it is compatible with software such as #Mobilizon. You can create and receive events in the area you selected.

Joining and leaving events is not implemented yet.

Being able to migrate your :pixelfed: posts along with followers to other Pixelfed servers is something we need to do, and will be a priority after I ship the new release, and mobile app later this month.

I say to other Pixelfed servers, because I'm not aware of any other software that would support this, but I do plan to write a FEP so we can support full account migration between software!

#Pixelfed #AccountMigration #ActivityPub

Loops has developed it's own optimized server to server communication to support near real-time federation of latency sensitive activities, like Live stream chat messages.

I'm working on the draft FEP, and will share more details soon!

In 1968 Dijkstra declared GOTO statements harmful.

In 2021 someone built them an entire social network anyway.

GotoSocial is a lightweight #ActivityPub server that can run on a potato, blocks scrapers by default, and with privacy defaults that would get a product manager fired at any real company.

Now it's one of the fastest growing on the fediverse.

Built by @dumpsterqueer under the name Super Serious Business, which is the most honest branding in tech right now.

Happy to announce that federation bit is complete! Next step is purchasing a domain and spinning up a flagship instance which should happen in upcoming days :)

#fediverse #fedidev #activitypub #prismodev

The network effect is crucial to every social platform, and what differentiates them is how they are able to match IRL connections with online ones, and we can do this, but it needs to be done carefully and in a way that preserves privacy and user autonomy across platforms and services.

No single software should have the ability to wall off access, or we become the thing we worked so hard to replace.

More details soon πŸ‘€

It's a strange feeling, building something with no one to answer to but the people using it.

No walls to raise. No data to harvest. No quarter to hit.

Just a network of communities that actually belong to the people in them.

I look forward to working with @benpate, @Bonfire and @evan from the SWF on E2EE Direct Messages in Loops, Pixelfed and Sup!

They’re doing some amazing work, and it makes a lot of sense to collaborate and widen compatibility across our platforms!

#ActivityPub #E2EE

The thing about the fediverse is that when one of us wins, we all win.

I couldn't be more proud to work alongside so many talented people who share the same belief: together we're stronger, and there's so much more we can build.

The corporate platforms had a decade and billions of dollars on us. They still can't build the one thing we did: a network nobody owns, nobody can sell, and nobody can take away.

A social home for the people. By the people.

Today is announcement day πŸ”₯

Bonfire is shifting its centre of gravity: from social features to community tools. Four things ship today, and the whole story is here: bonfirenetworks.org/posts/bo...

1. Bonfire for communities
Groups and topics, community rules, decision-making (from quick polls through structured consensus to weighted score voting, where an objection can count for more than an approval), events, shared organisation profiles, announcements.

A ready-to-use space you can then take apart: add what's missing, fork what almost fits, switch off what you don't need.

2. Our first Mosaic case study
Six months with Jacobin's German edition, building jacobin.social from the ground up: a home for 3,000+ readers, wired into their Ghost publication, in their language and their look and feel. Their readers crowdfunded the project, which included a reboot of the magazine and a new community space. Now every publisher can benefit. What one community funds, every community inherits. Details: bonfirenetworks.org/case-stu...

3. A deep Ghost integration
Keep publishing exactly as you do now, and Bonfire can become the home for everything that happens around the work: your archive imported, new articles followed, members and tiers synced, sign-in through Ghost, federated discussion under every piece. Details: bonfirenetworks.org/ghost/

4. The Telling
One script tag turns any web page into a federated conversation. Readers reply with an account they already have, on Bonfire, Mastodon, anywhere. The thread lives on your server, and you can take it with you. Details: bonfirenetworks.org/telling/

Being straight with you: this is a 1.0 beta. Groups work within a server and don't federate yet. We're designing that in the open with the W3C groups task force, because we'd rather it work across the whole fediverse than ship a dialect only Bonfire speaks.

Want to poke at it? Groups are live on the campground, our open test instance. Make an account and try it out: campground.bonfire.cafe

Finally, we've rebuilt the website to reflect the new direction: bonfirenetworks.org/

Now back to following up with crowdfunding backers to organise install parties, co-design workshops, and other rewards. Thank you for your patience πŸ’›#fediverse #ActivityPub

If there are any other #fediverse developers working on a TikTok like platform for the fediverse:

Maybe we can join forces and work together with Loops, and if not, lets keep in touch so we can work on #activitypub compatibility?

I'm already working closely with @stux on #Goldfish, which is shaping up to be a serious fedi TikTok contender!

#strongerTogether

Good morning Fedi friends,

I have been feeling a rising anxiety over the state of the open web and the fediverse - after seeing efforts by politicians all over the world (in Europe too!) to introduce age verification laws for social media.

My way of coping?

Teaching people how to self-host their own Fediverse profile (using the superb #GoToSocial) via #YunoHost.
