Cool well as long as I have the entirety of cycling mastodon looking at me right now, time for some #shamelessSelfPromotion! I make handmade geeky/nerdy bags from my home studio in Somerville MA. Cyclists might be especially interested in my high-visibility stickers: rhymes-with-doctor.myshopify.c…
They're made of retro-reflective material that bounces light directly back to the source - I have them on my helmet and they are SO BRIGHT when car headlights or bicycle lights hit them. US shipping only (unfortunately), stickers ship free.
rhymes-with-doctor.myshopify.c… also has a ton of other tote / messenger / fanny packs / etc for your carrying-stuff convenience.
If you're local to #boston #cambridgeMA #somervilleMA I'll be selling at the FLUFF FESTIVAL next Saturday, September 19, 1-5p! Come say hi, I love meeting my pocket friends.

Reflective Stickers
These high-visibility stickers are great to add to helmets, water bottles, bike or scooter frames, or any other hard surface! They reflect light directly back to the source: the brighter the light, the brighter the reflection.Sarah Wachter Designs
I am so 100% serious about this: putting little streamers on my bike handlebars has made drivers approximately a million times less asshole. They wait behind me when I’m going up a hill. They let me turn left. They give me space when passing. It’s genuinely bonkers how much nicer it’s made my experience of urban cycling.
Oh look, that's a bike trailer I haven't seen before.
So, my son insisted I pick him up Greek pastries at the local Greek festival, which was a bit of a project as it was remote parking with a shuttle. I said, forget that and just parked within bicycling distance. At the gate, asked the nice ladies if it was okay to walk the bike through or of there was bike parking... and one of them was absolutely dumbfounded, saying "we've never, ever had anyone ask that question before!". Before it became a problem I just told here "okay I will walk it and will lock it up if things are too crowded"... (she was about to go ask one person or another, lol....) #BikeTooter

A7:
This depends so much on the specifics of the roads and the cycleways (as well as your own skill & confidence, and the local motorists' temperament).
On my commute, there's parts where I use the cycle path, and parts where I cycle on the road, because the path has to give way to roads, or is full of posts, or is barely wide enough for one person yet nominally shared with pedestrians, or...
@puppethead @bikenite I prefer to bike on the paths, but sometimes it's impossible to get onto them from where I'm coming from or impossible to take to my destination. I also know some cyclists who find it easier to cycle with vehicular traffic because it's difficult to pass people on the narrow standard-width bike paths we have here. Overall, I think having some cyclists on the paths and some on the roads is a good thing because it helps drivers to understand (if such a thing is possible) that the roads actually belong to everyone.

Most of the busy urban roads I use have 20mph / 32 kph limits - so I ride with the traffic (in line with the motorised not in the gutter) unless there is really good infrastructure.
Less urban roads with higher speeds which I probably know less well - more likely to use cycle paths of whatever description

@puppethead asks:
I saw a couple of cyclists riding on a traffic-heavy road with no shoulder, correctly riding with the flow of traffic. But there was a separated bike path on the opposite side of the road that seemed much safer.
Q7. Is it better to bike against the traffic flow on a safer path especially if it's separated, or stick to being part of traffic?

And our last question this week: your week in a photo.
Q8. What did you see this week? Reply with a photo if you'd like. Cycling related or not is fine. Tell us about it!

@MartyCormack asks:
Two days this week while riding road bicycle rides, I was harassed by multiple Red-winged Blackbirds that swooped down nearly crashing/landing on my helmet. They're territorial and especially protective of their nests.
Q6. Have you ever been annoyed by, harassed, chased or attacked by critters while cycling?

A1. I am posting from Berkeley, CA as usual tonight. I can track stand for short periods of time, say 5-10 seconds before I loose my balance. I have found track standing to be a particularly useful skill for restarting a stalled climb on really steep mtb trails when you are in your lowest gears.
@realSiegfried asks:
Q3. Do you know about this tradition we have here in Germany (is it common elsewhere, too?) where we leave a white-painted bicycle at the spot where a cyclist was killed by a car-driver?
Do you do something similar where you live?

Our intro, and question from @streetmeme
Q1. Where are you posting from today?
Can you track stand? For how long? How much easier is it to track stand on a fixie?
(If you ride a cycle with >2 wheels, is there an equivalent?)
@bobjonkman asks:
Q4. Do you know what a "Collision Checklist" is? More specifically, what's on it?

Hello Saskatoon people! There are Pride events happening this weekend, and our good friends at Saskatoon Cycles will be running their Bike Valet service!
We're excited that our free Cycling Guide mobile app will make it easy to get a low-stress cycling route directly to that safe Bike Valet location. Leave your bike there, enjoy the awesome events and then retrieve your bike and ride home 😀🚴🏼♀️🚴🏼♀️🚴🏿♂️🚴🏿♂️❤️
Happy cycling!
Please boost for visibility. And tell your friends!
"...Specifically, the regulations would:f
Impose an age limit of 12 years for class 1 and 2 e-bikes;
Reinforce helmet requirements and passenger restrictions (passengers are only allowed if the e-bike is specifically designed to accommodate multiple riders with a permanent second seat); and
Provide an option for cited individuals to complete an e-bike safety course instead of a $25 fine...."

Test ride on some new tires and new waxed chain. 700x25's were the right choice. The Panaracer bargain tires ($10 each!) are great. Don't know how they do on puncture resistance or racing, but perfectly fine for my uses. #BikeTooter
New closeout tires from Panaracdr arrived, mounted. Also had some leftover retroreflective orange tape, decided to attach bits to the rim (away from brakes of course). Will go give it a test ride after I finish off some stuff for work. #BikeTooter

How much emergency money do you carry on your bike rides? (Comes in handy for emergency ice cream)
Different amounts for commuting than for day trips? Multi-day trips?
@markn asks:
Q5. Does anybody else have a cycling mascot or lucky charm they take on rides?
My usual companion is a small green dinosaur named Godfrey. He gets a wash once a year, generally I aim for better hygiene standards myself.

@mdione asks, re: routes becoming boring:
Q2. Do you live in a checkerboard city (square, regular blocks, popular in the American continent) or an unplanned city (mostly very old cities)?
I grew up on a checker board, so varying the route was easy, but now I live in a 2000yo+ city that has very few variation options.
Are there nearby alternate routes that go mostly parallel to the original route? (not as common in unplanned cities)
edits lol
I have committed many violences on the front derailleur frame
but i have earned knowledge and made advancements
you will note the bike is in its lowest possible gear and i got there through ordinary shifting
on the stand, we have:
clean back gears in front gear 1: 1-4
clean back gears in front gear 2: 2-8
clean back gears in front gear 3: also 2-8
this is imperfect but it gets me the maximum gearing range and i will take it for now
if this works I may need to reinforce the frame, i have ... improved it ... mostly through removal
On the way to the #CommunityGarden (I took the scenic long way to get there)!

What's the proper way to dispose of used chain degreaser? Obviously not the gutter/storm drains. It's got a lot of oils and solvents in it, so adding toxic chemicals to the sanitary sewer or septic doesn't seem right either.
