Another Jazz post:

Today its 100 years since the birth of Miles Davis; the one jazz musician nearly everyone has heard of.

Across a long career, Miles seldom looked back, never resting on his laurels but rather pushed forward into new forms... from Kind of Blue to electric Miles, sometimes he took people with him, sometimes he left them behind, but in the end few musicians can have so shaped their home genre, and innovated so often.

He may no longer be with us but his music is!

RIP Sonny Rollins

For jazz fans a towering colossus of the saxophone, Rollins work spanned be-bop to fusion, with his distinctive sound always taking the lead.

Famous for practicing on Brooklyn Bridge & memorialising it in music as well as providing the soundtrack for Alfie (a landmark British film), Rollins was one of those musicians who was alway there, always playing & always interesting.

A genius has left the stage

Just on the off chance, I am looking for some help from the fediverse in re-obtaining the following music album:

Fast & Louche, Top Shelf Jazz, 2009. Originally discovered via @pluralistic from his post (boingboing.net/2009/07/15/top-…). At some point in time the iTunes monster ate my copy and by the time I realised it was gone, the album was no longer available.

Additionally, The band appears to have long since disbanded and I can't find a way to contact them to re-acquire a copy.

I loved this album, so any help finding it again or putting me in contact with someone who can help would be hugely appreciated.

This week I have mainly been reading, no. 297.

Nicola Barker's social satire TonyInterruptor (2025) is a short but sweet tale of the impact (via social media & the social interactions of its various protagonists) of a heckle at a free jazz concert. It's knowing & razor sharp, skewering various contemporary cultural tropes & behaviours. I often find such satires fail to satisfy, but this is completely different; powerfully caustic & hilarious. A joy to read.

Happy Birthday Herbie Hancock

There are few jazz musicians who have had such a long career & contributed to so many different aspects of jazz music, from his work with Miles, to his towering achievements in jazz-fusion, from his acoustic playing (just brilliant) to his electric forays (finding ways to push the frontier of what jazz might be).

No jazz collection is complete without a fair few albums by Hancock - a great, great musician!

Some great music from the 80s, no.42

Herbie Hancock. A Quick Sketch

A change of pace for Sunday. This lovely (but pretty long) Herbie Hancock track should have featured Freddie Hubbard but he was not available & so it showcased a young Wynton Marsalis, playing with the personal of a classic Miles Davis group from the early 60s. Driven by Tony Williams & Ron Carter's superb rhythm section & punctuated by Hancock's great piano playing. Great modern jazz in any decade!
