When I was in elementary school my father told me a story. He was little, maybe Kindergarten, maybe before the end of World War II. Walking with his mom, holding her hand. Black man walking towards them on the sidewalk, and little Lenny's mom squeezes his hand and stiffens with fear. "Just some old black guy, shamblin' down the street."

He told the story as though it was fucked up, destructive, as though it was the very mechanism, the enacted tragedy, of the transmission of racism. But I noticed that he never used the verb "to shamble" before, or since.

I got even more confused through my teens as his (post-Reagan) behaviors grew more and more contradictory to the happy bullshit everybody told children (and themselves) during the previous decade about the dawn of a new Age of Aquarius.

Never mind his subsequent descent into facism guided by basic cable. My point is that my generation may have done better than his, but I am by no means perfect.

Words are quiet and actions are loud.
