Happy Juneteenth!

We honor the legal abolition of the enslavement of peoples of African descent AND the ongoing struggle against its continuing white supremacist and patriarchal legacy.

The bird shown here is a Cattle Egret which symbolizes the African Diaspora, as fellow birder and author Christian Cooper points out. Originally found in Africa and parts of SE Asia and southern Europe, the Cattle Egret was driven by storm winds from Africa to the Americas in the late 19th century, around the time of the abolition. The versatile birds adapted to their new home and spread to warm-weather (and, increasingly, temperate) areas throughout this hemisphere.

Cattle Egrets are actually more closely related to the Herons (Ardea) than to the Egrets (Egretta). Unlike most of their relatives, Cattle Egrets favor open, grassy areas, rather than aquatic environments, and received their name from their frequent occurrence in pasture areas, where they forage on insects stirred up by the movement of cattle. The first bird was photographed in a pasture in the Valle de Viñales, Cuba, in March 2024. The second was taken with my old point-and-shoot when I was a fledgling birder in Antigua in April '21.

jfml.eu/2021/03/illustration-r…

I think they could be on a shirt, or something, what do you think?

(Though now that I've seen it the left wing is very small compared to the other one ^__^)

@bikenite #bikenite A8 I wiped out on my gravel bike during a training ride Monday and banged up my ribs so have been off the bike this week. On a happier note some pelicans stopped by our local pond for a few days- normally they just fly over. #birds

Alright people, it's time for one of the biggest #CrowUpdate of the year! I heard Mr and/or Ms Crow making quite some noise for the past hour or so in the park. Some familiar calls ("where are you! come here!") and some I heard before but I don't really understand. I suspected something and... I was right!!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen, let me introduce you to Junior 1 and Junior 2, 2026 edition!!!

Striped cuckoo (Tapera naevia) chicks utilize specialized, cryptic plumage that mimics the texture and color of pinecones for camouflage.

The star of today's outing was a female anhinga. Not a lifer—I saw one in Argentina at Iguazu Falls 11 years ago—but a treat nevertheless. I also hadn't seen any black-crowned night herons in this area; today, I saw three. To round it out, there was a double-crested cormorant.

California Towhee was trying to steal a shiny bicycle part today. Couldn't tell what it wanted. it was pecking at something, trying to take it, but I think must be something heavy ("clink! clink! clink clink clink! clink!"). Couldn't figure out exactly what it was pecking at from where I was, it is in a tray of parts removed from the bike I attempted to dissolve the frozen seat post using lye... #birds #BikeTooter

This is what happens when a bird unexpectedly flys overhead and I pull out my iPhone, point it in the right direction and try to get a photo — and get a bit lucky.

Vultures eat anthrax, botulism, rabies, & cholera for breakfast.

Their stomach acid is among the most corrosive in the animal kingdom, with a pH around 1, low enough to dissolve the bones, hide, & pathogens of dead animals that would kill almost anything else.

A vulture eating a diseased carcass isn't a vector for disease, it's the end of the line. The disease chain ends in the vulture's gut, & that's pretty hardcore.

When vulture populations crashed in India in the 1990s, rotting livestock carcasses sat where vultures used to clean them.

Feral dogs and rats took over the cleanup, both of which actually do spread rabies. Researchers later linked the vulture collapse to roughly 500,000 deaths in India over the following decade.

The same collapse is now underway in sub-Saharan Africa. 6 of 11 African vulture species are threatened with extinction, primarily from poisoned poaching baits.

The animals nobody finds cute are doing more public health work than most of the species we actively protect.

I had a visit from this feathery boy. Or maybe she's girl. Just sat patiently while I got very close for the photo. I suspect that they were waiting for a snack. Lots of people in my street like to feed the birds. But I had nothing suitable and there was no way I was sharing my hot buttered raisin toast.

This #EarthDay I present to you...

my front door

My family will be using the garage door for the next couple of weeks as we have for the last couple

We, all of us, all of humanity, are nothing more than a thin expression on top of the natural world. Take care of it, and it takes care of you. Don't take care of it, and, well... not good things

i wish more took heed, but we're an egocentric species

The Serviceberry is already blooming (usually in May), and there is a lot of wooing going on the the yard. The Redwinged Blackbirds are so expressive, especially on a sunny day. It is funny to me how their looks range from gloriously magnificent to hilariously goofy. Nature! I'd be weak too if I was a RWBB girl 🤩😁 #birds

Hummingbird Report: behold female (white throat) and male black chinned hummingbirds buzzing around the feeder. You can sort of see hints of the male’s purple collar when the light hits him right. There’s no purple or green pigment in the feathers, it’s all iridescence. Science!

These badass lil fuckers have no fear of me whatsoever; I can get within a couple of feet and they don’t give a shit. They just keep on swoopin’ right past my face, pullin’ up at 10 Gs and nailin’ the sugar-holes. Once when I was wearing a red hat one landed on my head.

Sound up for cute hummie chirps and wing-buzzes
