I've been looking for a way to save #alttext for my images in a convenient place, so I can reuse it when I repost the image again / somewhere else. I've been using my website for that which is cool but not all my social images are on my website.

I just found out that you (obviously 🙄) can edit #exif #metadata with #Digicam (Ctrl-Shift-M) which then conveniently shows up in #Dolphin !

Hello #Linux people ^__^

I have a computer that is on #Ubuntu 24.04.5 #LTS.

Shouldn't I be able to upgrade to 26.04.1 LTS? I thought after the first point release of the next LTS „do-release-upgrade“ would do that?

But when I do that I get „There is no development[???] version of an LTS available.“

Thanks in advance!

This is my Veronica Explains appreciation post…

If you want to learn super-cool things about computers and Linux (and how to mix them together), Veronica’s channel is the place.

makertube.net/c/veronicaexplai…

@veronica’s channel is probably my favorite on PeerTube. One of her videos even helped me to get Linux running on my old MacBook.

So if you like this kind of thing, I recommend adding her channel to your subscription list. Oh, and if you don’t have a PeerTube account, you can subscribe via RSS or as a podcast feed (PeerTube is rad that way).

I just lost my job today, so here we go..

I'm a ~30 years career Sysadmin/DevOps/Server Shepard/Graybeard whatever its called now UNIX nerd.

Looking for work doing UNIX'y stuff. I mostly do automation, and have avoided working with AI and Kubernetes (though I have a bit of k8s experience at two jobs, I just prefer "the old way")

Chef, Puppet, Cfengine, Ansible, Shell scripts, etc.

I've built Linux distributions, and automation tools. Having worked at Redhat, TurboLinux, Penguin Computing, Salesforce, and Chef.

Built and maintained monitoring systems, checks, and lived the on-call life.

Built and managed CI systems, and Pipelines.

I've written and maintained software in Ruby, Python, and Shell. I've dabbled in just about every other programming language you'll find on a UNIX system.

I have spent a lot of time with *BSD, Solaris, IRIX, and Linux, and to a lesser extent HPUX, and AIX.

If its sysadmin work on a UNIX, I've likely done it.

Remote only / West Michigan maybe / not willing to relocate

You're implying a CLI experience, however virtually all File Browsers in #Linux have some kind of way to create an SFTP network connection. Then the File browser itself provides the progress bar. I do this in #KDE on a daily basis (and like my progress bars, MB/sec, cancel button, etc)

Every few years I'm like "whose DHH" and every fucking time I go and flip that log over I remember why I closed the page on that chapter.

I think omarchy.org is a HELL fucking no for me.

Fucking fascist prick slopware purveyor.

I might have a wait and see on Debian but I definitely have seen enough of this omarchy AI VC honeypot. Fuck this fascist shit.

My review on GNU/Linux of the drawing tablet XPpen Artist 12 3rd is now published! It's a clever little display drawing tablet and relatively cheap, I’m truly loving it! I've already used it to finish a comic on the train, and it'll be my my go-to device for travelling from now on. 🩷 Taking the pink one was the best decision!

Anyone with a amazon #kindle paperwhite 3 (2015, 7th Gen) who would be interested in installing #Linux 6.15 and getting rid of nearly all the Amazon bits?

I'm now looking for brave alpha testers to dig out their old kindle and test installation scripts (there is a chance of bricking which could be rescued by tapping the serial lines)

Let me know if you are interested.

If y'all haven't already now would be a good time to abandon all #Meta products.

Hey! If you want to support a human made, queer led, free operating system that is doing something new and interesting, go chip ElementaryOS a few bucks.

The team putting it together is absolutely devoted to the community, rejects non-human contributions, and is loud and proud about building an ethically sourced, truly accessible platform for the average person.

Maybe you don't use Elementary OS or care about the work it is doing, but your aging auntie, disabled neighbor, colorblind friend, or non-native English speaking co-worker may get a ton of value out of it.

Contributions to EOS also support development of the Pantheon DE which is one of the lightest, friendliest, and most stunningly beautiful projects to grace FOSS in a long time.

Help out where you can!

:blobcatbusiness: What's the most common complaint I've heard about Linux?

Not the installation process.
Not finding a distro.
Not getting programs to work.
Not troubleshooting.
Not hardware compatibility.

The most common complaint about Linux I've seen is this:
For a normal computer user, asking for help is just about impossible.

They ask a simple question and:
People respond "Did you Google it?"
People complain that the question wasn't asked "correctly".
People respond "RTFM"
People get mad??? at them for making an easy mistake.

We can't expect normal people to know to, or even know how to deal with any of that stuff.

Search engines these days are awful, manuals are hard to read for most people (especially stuff like ArchWiki), and normal people make mistakes we think are easily avoidable.

The solution to making Linux more popular is not ruthless promotion. The solution is to actually help the people who are trying to use it. :ablobcatattention:

If you wish to open the zip file safely, download a #Linux "LiveCD" and put both on a bootable USB flash drive.

Takes only a few minutes. Instructions on the site.

Who is good for selling laptops that run Linux in the UK nowadays? I like my x220 but it's getting a bit long in the tooth, plus it's quite heavy. I used to use Tier 1 but I've no idea if they're still good.

Basically I want something like a MacBook Neo form factor but running Linux. I don't want to faff around with something that's difficult to get running - whilst I'm capable of tinkering, on this occasion I want something that Just Works.

My first company, Opera, was built on word of mouth. The same applies to my 2nd company, @Vivaldi. We have never had the means that Big Tech has. In the case of Vivaldi, we have even avoided investors, to not end up like Opera.

We have also made it harder for our selves. We likely could have generated more funds through adding stuff like Crypto, AI or just plain old data collection in the browser, but we choose not to. We are also not an Ad company like most of our larger competitors. Instead we have added a wealth of features and customization.

Now people are starting to understand that just going with Big Tech may be easy to start with, but ends up not being worth it. In fact we now have governments and companies thinking that they need to move away from Big Tech and quickly.

We welcome you all.

So, I have this very weird problem on my #linux #desktop machine (running #Bazzite based on #fedora :

Every Monday morning my #SSD gets hammered with reads for about 10 – 20 minutes to a point where the system is unusable for that time. I can see this in Resources (the disk activity is 100%) but I cannot figure out what is doing this. KDE System Monitor, btop, Resources don't show anything that is unusual.

Any ideas?

This smacks of a compromised something or other... why is an apt upgrade of firmware-b43-installer going to a childcare blog. A violin shop? Hmm... reinstalling this entirely.

(Update: this apparently WAS a bug, but has been fixed in more recent versions of Debian... but not old ones h/t @alienghic )
