Twenty five years ago today I started the #Safari and #WebKit projects at #Apple Computer.

Which means Safari is now old enough to rent itself a car. But let's not speculate about my age.

I'm still sad I can't use Safari on my Windows PC. Alas, I lost the battle to keep it there. But at least WebKit's DNA seeded or influenced most browsers we use today.

And I'm proud of that impact. Along with the wonderful team I built who made it all happen. Here's to another 25, friends.

Cheers. 🥂😊💖

My first company, Opera, was built on word of mouth. The same applies to my 2nd company, @Vivaldi. We have never had the means that Big Tech has. In the case of Vivaldi, we have even avoided investors, to not end up like Opera.

We have also made it harder for our selves. We likely could have generated more funds through adding stuff like Crypto, AI or just plain old data collection in the browser, but we choose not to. We are also not an Ad company like most of our larger competitors. Instead we have added a wealth of features and customization.

Now people are starting to understand that just going with Big Tech may be easy to start with, but ends up not being worth it. In fact we now have governments and companies thinking that they need to move away from Big Tech and quickly.

We welcome you all.

With 26.5, you get ads in #Apple Maps. At least #Apple automatically opts you out of personalized ads. You Can't Turn Ad Display Off, however. Thank you Apple for making 26.x a clusterf%%k of bad design, an accessibility disaster, and now an exemplar for #enshittification(@pluralistic). When you upgrade to 26.5 and visit Maps, read the Advertising and Privacy link carefully. A good reason NOT to update. Can't tell you truly how disgusted this makes me!

I hope this BADLY damages Apple's reputation.

Apple CEO Tim Cook recently announced that he’ll step down in September, paving the way for Senior VP of Hardware Engineering John Ternus to take the reins. “Under Cook, the company has become less surprising but massively financially successful; some of Apple’s newer products have flopped or underperformed, but far more have become and stayed excellent thanks to years of competent iteration,” @ArsTechnica Senior Tech Reporter Andrew Cunningham writes. From a hardware success like the Apple Watch to a big swing that missed, here are six things from the Cook era that stand out to Cunningham:

Proprietary #LLM-backed gen #AI systems' *users* aren't criminals! They're just users of proprietary systems & some of them want to engage positively with FOSS.

Years ago, I supported Homebrew's membership at #SFC despite their *primary* goal of improving #Apple products with #FOSS. It make me a bit 🤢, but — historically — forming alliances with proprietary software enthusiasts who mean well & are #FOSS-curious is why our community is resilient.

Apple and Google have been hosting and steering users toward nudify apps, according to a new report. The Tech Transparency Project found 31 of these apps were rated suitable for minors.

Digital Trends has more on how this happened, why it matters and the pressure on Big Tech to make their platforms safer.
