🚨 GOOGLE IS KILLING ANDROID FREEDOM. 🚨

This #DiDay we call on you to take action & sign the petition:
change.org/p/keep-android-open…

Because Google must not decide what you can & can't download on YOUR Android device.

This undermines one of Android’s defining features: the freedom to install software from wherever you choose. 😤

#Android is supposed to be open, & your phone should be yours → NOT GOOGLES.

It’s time to support open alternatives like @GrapheneOS ✊

Maybe it's just me - but at #Alphabet"s scale, 4 billion € rather seems like a tip than a #fine: The number of active #Android users worldwide has been estimated at 3.9 billion in 2025. Android's market share is estimated at 70%. So the fine is a bit more than 1 € per active user in 2025 - for a company that averages more than 40 €/a per active user.
And fining #Google took more than a decade. In this time, their revenue as well as their market cap increased by a factor of 10... 🙄

My first company, Opera, was built on word of mouth. The same applies to my 2nd company, @Vivaldi. We have never had the means that Big Tech has. In the case of Vivaldi, we have even avoided investors, to not end up like Opera.

We have also made it harder for our selves. We likely could have generated more funds through adding stuff like Crypto, AI or just plain old data collection in the browser, but we choose not to. We are also not an Ad company like most of our larger competitors. Instead we have added a wealth of features and customization.

Now people are starting to understand that just going with Big Tech may be easy to start with, but ends up not being worth it. In fact we now have governments and companies thinking that they need to move away from Big Tech and quickly.

We welcome you all.

As if #Android would be better in any way :)

Smartphone ecosystem definitely needs a new OS

🚨 Say that I were to give a talk to EU policy makers and OSS communities at a very big conference tomorrow..

and that I want to spend half of my talk on how Google is locking down #Android through:
1. Device attestation
2. Developer registration
3. Age/identity verification

What should I absolutely include? 👀

Input is welcome, sorry for the short notice. Plain language + realistic calls to action pls.

#Android testers needed! I am building a free app for #ADHD folx with some basic productivity/staying on track features. I designed it for myself and my close family members but it could be useful to anyone. In order to launch it on the Play store, Google requires me to get 14 people to test it in a 'closed test'. If you have an android device, would you be willing to test it? If so, please email me and I will send you the link to download it from the Play Store. brad@imipolex.org

sounds like the web is about to get a lot more annoying to use for #grapheneos users and others using #android devices with """compromised integrity""", people without smartphones, people using smartphones with other operating systems, etc.: support.google.com/recaptcha/a…

google's new "mobile reCAPTCHA verification" will require you to scan a QR code from either an iOS device with the reCAPTCHA app or an android device with up-to-date google play services.

EDIT: this is part of google's new "fraud defense" system, and is (seemingly) intended to be used for more "important" things like purchases rather than just e.g. comment sections. however, there's nothing stopping site owners from using this thing everywhere

Does your car have @Vivaldi available?

If you have a new car that runs Android Automotive, it is quite likely that it can run Vivaldi!

It all started with the Polestar 2, but now Vivaldi runs on Polestar, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Renault, Audi, Ford, Lincoln and a lot more.

To find Vivaldi, if it is not pre-installed, find the play store and search for Vivaldi.

Enjoy! We worked hard on making Vivaldi work well in your car as well. Next time, when parked, try enjoying a live streaming sports match of your choice. It is pretty awesome!

Feel like Verizon did this already, throwing customers into Google's maw. Except I think I went with the Samsung "app" that is now terminal.
If only the settings would differentiate the sources of the palette of message apps.

Getting rather frustrated that the latest Android strips location EXIF from the web file picker.

Doesn't seem to be any workaround that'll let you pick a photo and have a web browser see the geolocation.

Like, I get the privacy issues, but it is rather frustrating for location-based web apps.

(Before reply-guying, please test if the code you found on a 4 year old StackOverflow post actually works on modern Android, thanks.)
