I have been thinking about absolving my personal Mastodon. I use this Terminal Tilt account almost exclusively anyway. But it got me thinking about why I kept it separate in the first place.
I used to avoid politics and anything that might alienate people. I wanted more followers. But software freedom IS politics. Power, ownership, surveillance, who controls what we use. That's not technical, that's political.
What I'm really missing is an open alternative to Google Maps' (mostly crowd-sourced) / Tripadvisor's photos of cafes and restaurants interiors, menus and food items etc.
Does something like this exist? Would this be out of scope for mapillary.com/ (I think it wants to be an Streetview alternative?). Uploading images like that to Wikimedia feels to be the wrong place as well …

The topic is "Good Enough Ancestor: Software Freedom as Civic Care across Generations". It will connect the software freedom movement to Audrey's and Caroline Green's framework for local, community-governed, more caring AI systems rather than reliance on centralised systems. Tang and Green work in the local University of Oxford Institute for AI Ethics. Tang is also first Digital Minister of Taiwan, and 2025 Right Livelihood laureate. Before ministership and research, Tang was a prolific FLOSS programmer, and since has for example helped persuade Pol.is to adopt the AGPL license.

I agree on the gist, but with a twist. The control is in sustainable and healthy evolution of the protocol, which in turn will stimulate organic growth.
I am also a dreamer, and in my dream ActivityPub remains commons based, of the people by the people. I'd love to see Pixelfed and Loops and many other fedi services to gain adoption by millions and billions, because you and those others share value alignment. We dream collectively of making the world a better place.
Unfortunately #ActivityPub isn't commons based at the moment. At this point in time every increase in popularity of the fediverse is an attractor of commercial interests. Large #FOSS platforms prove that there is a market. And very large platforms become a threat to established #BigTech players, who are then forced to act.
Contrary to perhaps you and others, I don't think that corporate capture and takeover can be avoided once Big Tech giants decide to go all-in and throw billions bucks, 1,000's employees at it.
If you love tech but hate tech billionaires, free open source software aka #FOSS is a solution!
Don't give your time or money to those who try to control everything on this planet instead spend it on small developers coding their brains out!❤️
Have awesome free software, (maybe) donate to the small or single developers once in a while and stop feeding the billionaires!

Every Monday morning my #SSD gets hammered with reads for about 10 – 20 minutes to a point where the system is unusable for that time. I can see this in Resources (the disk activity is 100%) but I cannot figure out what is doing this. KDE System Monitor, btop, Resources don't show anything that is unusual.

We're thrilled to see the Commission acknowledge that this is an issue, and lay out a strategy to fix it.

Is there a #Buffer equivalent for Mastodon/fediverse? I currently only post to Mastodon anyway and on a single account; I just want something I can easily schedule posts for later at reasonable intervals so I don't spam too many at once. Which I usually fail at anyway, but that is the intent.

Do not use proprietary software. The more #opensource you use, the less people can spy on you, sell your data and surveil you.
Also, the higher the number of people using #foss software, the less leverage proprietary corps have to turn the internet against you.
W3C is very pleased to announce that the @sovtechfund has launched a pilot program to support independent #OpenSource maintainers participation in the work of our groups, including training, mentoring, and financial support to make sustained engagement possible. Proprietary #LLM-backed gen #AI systems' *users* aren't criminals! They're just users of proprietary systems & some of them want to engage positively with FOSS.
Years ago, I supported Homebrew's membership at #SFC despite their *primary* goal of improving #Apple products with #FOSS. It make me a bit 🤢, but — historically — forming alliances with proprietary software enthusiasts who mean well & are #FOSS-curious is why our community is resilient.

Since there is no revoking sessions in Pixelfed, and changing password doesn't log you out of any sessions, be careful with your Pixelfed credentials.
If you use Pixelfed and your account gets hacked, you can't do anything. Perhaps contacting Dansup is the only option.
