@dansup is in the next Pixelfed release a bugfix about the peertube issue?

It makes no sense, that #Peertube videos are not federated, but #Loops video are, they could even be played in #Pixelfed directly...

Even if one is your project, they should be both treated equal.
And yes, federating the complete video is too much, but the preview image and the link would be a minimum (for me)

This is my Veronica Explains appreciation post…

If you want to learn super-cool things about computers and Linux (and how to mix them together), Veronica’s channel is the place.

makertube.net/c/veronicaexplai…

@veronica’s channel is probably my favorite on PeerTube. One of her videos even helped me to get Linux running on my old MacBook.

So if you like this kind of thing, I recommend adding her channel to your subscription list. Oh, and if you don’t have a PeerTube account, you can subscribe via RSS or as a podcast feed (PeerTube is rad that way).

#Linux #Computers #VeronicaExplains #PeerTube

This is a clear example of why citizen journalism initiatives should always have their primary accounts on #PeerTube, with YT and other commercial outlets for backup and publicity purposes only.

fair.tube is a #peertube instance - i approve and engage everyone to publish on a peertube instance of your choice instead of tech-bro-yt

Full agree: the Fediverse needs to become easier and more familiar to use.

But that should mean open, self-hostable standards too. I would really like to see #OIDC / #OpenID Connect as a built-in option — like #Mastodon supports, or #PeerTube can gain through plugins — alongside Sign in with Apple, Google, etc.

For Pixelfed, an easy .env-based configuration for a generic OIDC provider would be ideal: issuer URL, client ID, client secret, scopes, redirect URI — done. That would let instance admins use #Keycloak, #Authentik, #Zitadel, their university/work SSO, or any other compatible provider.

Does #Loops have plans for generic OIDC login? And is this planned for #Pixelfed as well?

Making sign-up familiar matters. Making it interoperable and self-hostable matters just as much.

This week, we map the visual layer of the fediverse with current numbers (June 2026): Pixelfed, Loops, PeerTube, and ... Flickr?

Pixelfed: ~100K MAU across 700 servers. @dansup has been building it for eight years, mostly alone, turning down VC offers and funding it through a Kickstarter that raised CA$138K for a nonprofit foundation.

Loops: federated short-form video, also by dansup. mid-4,000s MAU, 26 servers. opt-in algorithmic feed (the default is chronological), trust-score moderation, no AI training on user content.

PeerTube: 47K MAU across 1,500+ servers. Framasoft (French nonprofit). the most infrastructure-heavy platform on the fediverse.

The visual web is the most expensive layer of the internet to decentralize. None of this was built on venture-scale economics.

is she on the fedi? indy media requires attention democracy.

we have to keep making the argument that while being able to post on your own site (#owncast and #peertube not YouTube) is essential, we also must work to make the way that info, ideas and art gets in front of people fully decided by other people not paid to promote anything. news in the public interest exists, it just doesn't reach people thanks to how the media ecosystem works.

we can change that.

What are your favorite #PeerTube channels?

Please boost if you're so inclined. I'd love to get a wide variety of responses.

Thanks. If an AI bot doesn't respect "robots.txt", but it doesn't conceal its user agent setting, the following "nginx" code will work as an alternative:

if ($http_user_agent ~* (GPTBot|ClaudeBot|put-more-here)) {
    return 403;
}

That code goes in the nginx "server" block.

PeerTube is an amazing project, but it's not really fair to compare it with Loops as it's meant for longer videos and has a different community vibe.

That being said, it would be neat if Loops added some sort of integration that links your PeerTube account, and shows a "view full video" link or button on the shorter Loops video.

Would there be any interest in this?

If I were to host my own ActivityPub-compatible site featuring my train videos between 15 seconds up to ~10 minutes, should I use #PeerTube or #Loops?

Help me weigh the pros-cons and your experiences, though I may end up trying both anyway.

I agree and disagree.
The UI of @HolosSocial is one of the best I have seen.
I am able to have pictures only, videos only, events only (that is not working for me) and all together. So in theory, I can switch between #Mastodon view, #Pixelfed view and #loops / #peertube view. All with one account. That's in my view really perfect. That's exactly what i miss so far. If i wanna read, i go to the All view. If I wanna see nice dog and cats posts, i go to the picture view.

We have received a Copyright claim from Amazon for our @PeerTube instance videos.trom.tf/ . Hetzner, the hosting company where we have the dedicated server at, gave us 24h to resolve it.

The problem?

The video in question, a documentary about "aliens", a garbage piece of content, was NOT hosted on our instance, of course. But since Peertube is federated the idiots sent the claim to our hosting company. Even if UNDER the video you can see that video is "Posted By:" and the instance and username. It takes a few seconds to see where the video is hosted.

But who cares...maybe Amazon has "AI Agents" employed and they simply find a video of theirs on a URL and see the IP of that URL and submit a Copyright claim to the hosting where that domain is registered?!

Bunch of idiots.

But it is very concerning the fact that they can do these and we, the ones who hosts (and for free for that matter), need to quickly "fix" these things even if the claim has nothing to do with our server.

We eventually had to block that URL, thanks Peertube for allowing that, else these idiots cannot understand that it was not us who were hosting that video.

Whenever I make a video the most important thing afterwards are the hashtags. The key hashtag to use IS #Peertube . Why? Because people follow the hashtag or search it here on Mastodon or other place on the Fedi to see what the latest videos are.

Then, I boost my video from my main account. This gives others the opportunity to watch the video and follow my PeerTube channel from other places on the Fedi.

So, how do you make money on youtube?

Ask 10 successful youtubers, and they'll tell you the same thing. Diversify. You don’t make significant money from the ad revenue. You make it from merch, or product deals, affiliate links. Youtube makes money from your content, you make money from using their platform to get your viewers off-platform to something that pays you better.

A while back, not terribly long. 3 or 4 years if memory serves, Youtube introduced something cool. A merch shelf. Directly below your content, you were able to link up your merch provider, and youtube would show 4 or 5 links to your own merch, right where your fans could see it. It was kinda a pain to configure, but once you had it, it was great. Your viewers had a direct line to your merch, you didnt have to link it in the description, or nag people in the video (though you could do those things for more eyeballs), but it was a nice thing they did to make it easier for us to actually do that diversification thing.

I personally never made a dime from it, im just not big enough, and its possible that bigger youtubers didnt either, but i thought it was an awesome gesture, helping creators make money on the platform.

Yesterday, i got an email from youtube. They're ditching the merch shelf in order to de-clutter the watch page. Remove the endless stream of shorts? no. Remove the ad overlays? no. Maybe tighten up the watch next panel? No. Remove the thing that gives the creator the most chance of making profit.

This just de-motivates me even more, and makes me want to embrace peertube (where i get no views, but at least im not being abused).

#enshitification #peertube #youtube

First of all - being on #PeerTube does not mean you need to leave #Mastodon - you can both follow and interact with videos directly from #Fediverse instance

You can also #boost them (just put the PeerTube URL in the search bar)

You can also follow PeerTube channel into #Podcast applications through #RSS and such.

Yes, UX has some round edges, but if you manage to try, it's quite powerfull tool.

And no, you will not achieve same result with Mastodon. Ever.

Also - it's time to stop talking PeerTube like it was supposed to replace YouTube - it will not. It's an alternative and it's quite bang for the buck actually.
